The summer heat in the South can be intense on your lawn.
With scorching afternoons day after day, its common to see our beautiful backyards dry out and go from lush and green to brittle and brown.
Thankfully, there are a couple of tips you can implement to help your lawn stay healthy despite the heat.
Grass Type- Something to Keep In Mind
Depending on your grass type, it may be normal if your grass isn't as green in the summer as it is in the spring or fall.
Cool-season grasses, like Fescue and Bluegrass, do better in cooler temperatures and the northern region. Warm-season grasses like Bermuda and Zoysia do better in the southern region, and thrive in warmer temperatures.
If you have warm-season turf you will likely have an easier time keeping the turf green and healthy in the southern summer heat.
Timing is Everything When You Water Your Lawn
When your lawn begins to look dry and needs watering, water your lawn early in the morning, around 5 or 6am. If you water during the night, your lawn will stay moist for too long, and moist conditions are an invitation for fungal lawn diseases. Watering in the afternoon is a wasted effort due to evaporation.
Watering right before sunrise will ensure your lawn is hydrated and prepared to take on the high temperatures, but not moist for long enough to risk fungal disease.
Keep Your Mower Blades Sharp
One of the most important aspects of mower maintenance is to ensure the blades are kept sharp.
If your mower blades are dull, this will tear the grass rather than cleanly cut it, and this can make your turf more susceptible to browning.
It is also important to mow your lawn during the cooler hours of the morning or evening as opposed to during the heat of the afternoon. If you cut your grass during the hottest time of the day, the hot summer sun can scorch freshly cut grass and lead to browning.
Fertilization is Key
Your lawn requires nourishment to maintain healthy growth. Keeping your turf on a consistent fertilization schedule is crucial to:
Keep your grass thicker and greener all throughout your lawn
Replenish the soil's nutrients
Establish a stronger, deeper turf root system to help the lawn grow in the heat
